Home Practice Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s

Set yourself up for success

  • pick up clutter

  • have props and water at hand

  • pick a playlist beforehand

  • light candles/smudge/aromatherapy

  • wear comfortable clothing that allows for easeful movements

Create realistic expectations

  • ask yourself what you want from today’s practice

  • set an intention to honor

  • choose an appropriate time length for your practice and set aside additional time for savasana and meditation

  • furry friends and little ones may be curious about what you’re up to on the floor, be open to sharing your practice but also know you can ask for space

  • be mindful of any injuries or spots of tension and take extra care when moving through asana

Be okay with imperfections

  • interruptions/distractions are bound to happen and part of the experience they serve as a beautiful way to bring us back to the present moment

  • allow yourself to feel whatever comes up regardless of its nature, some practices feel like total bliss and others may feel like pulling teeth

  • your practice may take a different direction than you had intended and that’s totally okay

try to approach each practice with fresh eyes and allow yourself to experience it as if it was the first time

Don’ts

Overthink it

  • there is no right or wrong way to do yoga, so long as you are able to breathe fully and are not experiencing pain

  • your mind will want to wander as that is it’s nature, it’s okay to let it wander for a while but when you’ve had enough you can always come back to noticing your breath

  • even if you have no idea what you’re doing some simple stretches and quiet time with yourself is better than nothing at all

  • it’s easy to get wrapped up in comparison, try to approach each practice with fresh eyes and allow yourself to experience it as if it was the first time
